How this overtime calculator works
Under the US Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime pay at 1.5× their regular rate for all hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek. Some states (California, for example) also mandate daily overtime. This calculator applies FLSA weekly overtime rules.
- Enter regular hourly rate and total hours worked in the week.
- Hours up to 40 are paid at the regular rate; hours above 40 are paid at 1.5× the regular rate.
- Overtime rate = regular hourly rate × 1.5.
- Total weekly gross pay = (40 × regular rate) + (overtime hours × overtime rate).
Some workers are exempt from FLSA overtime (salaried executives, professionals, etc.). State laws may be more generous. Consult your HR department for classification questions.
