How this self-employment tax calculator works

Self-employed individuals pay both the employer and employee portions of FICA: 12.4 % Social Security tax (on earnings up to the 2026 wage base of $176,100) and 2.9 % Medicare tax, totalling 15.3 %. The Additional Medicare Tax of 0.9 % applies to net earnings above $200,000 (single) / $250,000 (MFJ).
