How CCB Works

Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a federal tax-free monthly payment from CRA to eligible families with children under age 18. Replaced National Child Benefit in 2016. Base amount: $6,997/year per child (2026). Reduced based on net family income. Payments are tax-free and automatically issued monthly. Must apply to CRA to receive.

Maximum CCB for one child: $6,997/year if family income ≤ $36,238. For each child: Base amount $6,997. Reduced by 6% of income over $36,238 for first child, 13% for second+ children. Over $75,000 income: additional reduction. Benefit fully clawed back above ~$123,000 income. Example: Family income $50,000, one child = $6,997 - ($13,762 × 6%) = $6,171/year = $514/month.

Eligible if: Canadian resident, you or spouse are responsible for child's care, child < 18, child is Canadian citizen/PR. One parent applies (usually primary caregiver). Apply via CRA Form RC66 online or by mail. Retroactive to child's birth month. Must update income annually. Payments sent to eligible parent monthly, 15th of each month (or next business day).
