Understanding Your US Pay in 2026

Your gross salary and your take-home pay are often very different numbers. For a $75,000 annual salary in a mid-cost state, take-home pay is typically $55,000–$60,000 after federal income tax, Social Security (6.2%), Medicare (1.45%) and state income tax.

Pre-tax deductions reduce your tax bill: Contributing to a traditional 401(k), HSA or FSA lowers your federal taxable income. A $500/month 401(k) contribution reduces your taxable income by $6,000/year — saving roughly $1,320 in federal income tax for a worker in the 22% bracket, in addition to building retirement savings.

Pay period differences: Bi-weekly (26 paychecks/year) is the most common US pay schedule. Semi-monthly (24 paychecks) can feel confusing because monthly bills have more time between some paychecks than others. Our salary converter removes the confusion by showing all equivalents at once.
