Understanding Your US Taxes in 2026

The US uses a progressive tax system: higher income is taxed at higher marginal rates, but only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate. A single filer with $80,000 in taxable income does not pay 22% on all $80,000 — they pay 10% on the first ~$11,925, 12% on the next portion, and 22% only on the top slice.

Effective vs marginal rate: Most people's effective (average) tax rate is substantially lower than their top marginal bracket. Our income tax calculator shows both figures so you understand your true tax burden.

For freelancers and 1099 workers: You owe both employee and employer FICA taxes (self-employment tax = 15.3% on net earnings), in addition to income tax. This often means 1099 workers owe 25–40% of net income in total federal taxes and should set aside money quarterly.
